NYS Guidance on Cleaning and Disinfecting for Coronavirus

Release Date: March 11, 2020

TOWN OF CORTLANDT

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: NYS ISSUES GUIDANCE ON CLEANING AND DISINFECTING AT HOME & IN PUBLIC

We have received further guidance from the offices of the Governor and the New York State Department of Health regarding public facilities and the spread of the coronavirus. Our Town and Westchester County has been sharing important information and guidance to our residents, schools places of worship, libraries and other municipal entities in our area via online reports, etc.

The New York State Department of Health has issued guidance to residents of the State regarding preparedness within your home and for cleaning and disinfecting public spaces to limit exposure and spread of COVID-19.  We encourage each member of the public to read and follow the guidelines provided.  While we should not panic, we should be vigilant to help prevent spread of this virus.

The website is:  https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/Coronavirus/

Westchester County’s Health Department website for COVID-19 can be found at: https://health.westchestergov.com/2019-novel-coronavirus

As of information provided by New York State today at 11:15 a.m., there are 108 known cases of Covid-19 or Coronavirus in Westchester County and 173 statewide.

Regarding Prevention, while there is currently no vaccine to prevent this virus, these simple steps can help stop the spread of this and other respiratory viruses:

* Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

* Avoid close contact with people who are sick or have symptoms. Practice social distancing, or remaining at least 6 feet from others, wherever possible.

* Stay home when you are sick. Employers, please cooperate and support employees that are staying home, as it is in the best interest of all not to cross-infect others within the workplace

* Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

* Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

If you have any further questions or concerns, there is a hotline that has been established by New York State. The toll free number is 1-888-364-3065.

The Town will continue to coordinate efforts with the Westchester County Department of Health and, as necessary, the NYS Department of Health and the Governor’s office, as well as the County Executive’s Office.

Once again, we urge you to not panic, but to be prepared and responsible, and together we can do our part to assist with the prevention of Covid-19.
