Lead and Copper Rule
In 1991, EPA published a regulation to control lead and copper in drinking water. This regulation is known as the
Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) and has undergone several revisions since then.

The EPA’s 2021 Revised LCR was an effort to better protect children and communities from the risks of lead exposure.  This revision targeted schools and childcare facilities as an important step in getting the Lead out of our nation’s drinking water and empowering communities through education.

On August 4, 2022, the EPA released the Guidance for Developing and Maintaining a Service Line Inventory to support water systems. This will ultimately provide the State Health Department with needed information for oversight and reporting to EPA for all water districts. For the Cortlandt Consolidated Water District to be in compliance this will require the water district to prepare and maintain an inventory of water service line materials in our entire system no later than October 16, 2024.

The Cortlandt Consolidated Water District will be conducting a comprehensive assessment of water lines within all residential properties, local businesses, and facilities across the town. This assessment is a proactive step to ensure the continued quality and reliability of our water supplied to each consumer. The assessment process will involve a thorough examination of water service lines in the location where it enters your home. You will be contacted in early 2024 by our selected Town subcontractor to arrange for an appointment to install a new water meter register and have a lead swab test completed on the water service line.
