Aviation Playground
The Jim Martin Aviation Playground was opened to the public Sunday, July 14, 2024. Located at the Waterfront Park in Verplanck, this playground overlooks the scenic Hudson River.
In keeping with the past use of the parcel, the Town reconstructed the playground to be aviation themed. The land was previously owned by aviation enthusiast Jim Martin who owned the 6-acre seaplane aircraft base and other waterfront property. At one point, the seaplane landing averaged 85 aircraft operations per month! He donated 26 acres to the Town in 1991.
The playground includes three playground equipment spaces: a swing set for all ages, a play area tailored to toddlers, and an area for elementary school children. Even the safety flooring is designed to look like a seaplane runway to the Hudson! Other site features include a new asphalt walking trail that links the sidewalk from the Performance Stage trail to the Veterans Memorial trail. The Town is pleased to enhance our recreational spaces while honoring our Town’s history and heritage. Bring the whole family for some fun at the Aviation Playground!
