Why Recycle?

Did you know that food scraps account for the largest portion of waste in landfills, making up 30% of the municipal solid waste stream? Recycling food scraps into compost returns minerals and nutrients to the soil that would otherwise be lost when scraps are instead incinerated. Doing so also reduces the cost of municipal trash management.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

How to Food Scrap Recycle in Cortlandt, it's easy:

1. Pick up food scrap bin kit at the Purchasing Office Building at the Town Hall Campus (1 Heady Street, Cortlandt Manor). The cost of a composting kit is $15 (cash only).

2. COLLECT your food scraps in a small bin stored on the counter top or under the sink.

Optional- You can line your bin with small compostable brown bags.

3. TRANSFER the bagged or loose food scraps from the small bin into the large bin. It is recommended that this bin be stored in a garage or outside.
