DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES KICKS OFF MAY AS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH WITH ANNUAL SALUTE TO SENIORS EVENT

53rd Annual Salute to Seniors to be celebrated as four separate, smaller events throughout the County

(White Plains, NY) – The Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) will be recognizing the month of May as Older Americans Month with the 53rd Annual Salute to Seniors event. Salute to Seniors has been reimagined into four smaller, safer, outdoor events in northern, central and southern Westchester. The information and business expos will feature music as well as information on programs, services and products targeted at the senior community and their caregivers. Event schedules and times are listed below.

Older Americans Month was established in 1963 and since that time, the month-long acknowledgment of contributions from our senior citizens has become a Westchester County tradition. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the in-person Salute to Seniors event to be cancelled, but the celebration is back for 2021. DSPS, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and the Westchester County Public-Private Partnership have hosted Salute to Seniors for many years.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Westchester County’s senior citizens are an important part of our communities, and they deserve to be recognized for the accomplishments they’ve made over the years. We created events like the Salute to Seniors many years ago to bring people together and create access to the programs and services seniors need to feel healthy and safe. I am thrilled that the annual Salute to Seniors event is making a triumphant return in 2021, and I look forward to joining with Westchester County’s seniors again in person for more fun and informative programs.

DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter said: “This year’s theme, Communities of Strength, is especially important. Throughout this past year, our community has had to come together like never before to continue to communicate to and support our Senior Citizens. Now, we are stronger than ever.”

About Salute to Seniors:

The event will be held at each of the following locations from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parking and admission are free of charge, but ADVANCED RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Space is limited and safety protocols will be in place to allow our Seniors and their caregivers to participate in a safe, socially distanced way. One (1) box lunch will be provided to each Senior who registers. A maximum of 200 reservations will be accepted per location.

As in the past, sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are available. Sponsorship provides for inclusion at all the Salute to Seniors locations as well as several print and social media promotions.  Exhibitors can choose to showcase at one or all the locations which allows for a more strategic information-sharing opportunity. All participating organizations will be listed in the Salute to Seniors Directory which will be distributed to every attendee.

The Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation will be providing free rides all day for seniors attending a Salute to Seniors event, on all Bee-Line fixed route buses. Free all-day transportation is not limited to the events listed below:
